The second-gen, in 2011, saw diminishing returns: in its first year, it sold around 8,000 units. How will the new generation fare, since it's going to be released into a marketplace that has largely turned its affection to crossovers and SUVs. If it follows this sales trend, it may struggle to reach 3,500 units sold.

Heres what $80,000.00USD gets you in a pick up

I recently drove a brand-new 2017 Ford F-250 Platinum with a window-sticker price of just under $80,000. Instead, this happened at Hoffman Ford in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where vehicles like this F-250 Platinum are not especially unusual. In fact, I think the person who was most surprised by this thing was … me.

I was surprised by the F-250 for many reasons, and the sticker price was certainly one of them. I think the total figure was something like $77,700, which is an enormous amount of money for a pickup truck. I remember, when I was a kid, you could buy a Mitsubishi Mighty Max for like $8,400, and Mitsubishi sold that thing right up until safety regulations made them stop. THAT was a pickup truck. This new F-250 is a luxury vehicle.

And yet, really, it's a pickup truck. For one thing, it's 267 inches long. If you don't know much about car lengths, it's hard to explain how ridiculous that is, but here's a quick illustration: If I parked a Toyota Camry next to the F-250 and laid down behind the Camry, the F-250 would still be longer. You can park a Ford Focus, entirely, in its wheelbase. It is truly massive.

1.9sec to 60mph with a range of 600miles... That remains to be seen.

“How the government does it, how they phase it in, that’s the challenge, but it will go just as ultimate import duty will go as well.”

According to McCarthy, LCT is doomed regardless of who wins the next federal election, as both parties are keen to create a free trade agreement with EU nations, which have lobbied for the removal of the LCT for over a decade.

“Both of the major parties are committed to an EU free trade agreement in the framework that has been discussed, there is always a bit of finessing around some of it, but they are both parties that support low trade barriers and free trade.

“It’s [LCT] currently 33 per cent, my personal view is that you would want to implement it over a three-year period – 33 per cent, 22 per cent, 11 per cent, zero. Otherwise you are going to have a lot of dislocation in the market. No-one is going to shed a tear over the OEMs suffering but the government is potentially going to lose a lot of revenue.”

McCarthy, who is also involved in the workings of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), believes the Government will see the removal of the LCT as an opportunity for additional revenue streams, generated by the EU free-trade agreement.

“Their interest is for it to be a smooth gradual transition, no free trade agreement implements all its parts from day one, it’s staggered, so the economy can adjust and the suppliers can adjust. The challenge of working with the removal of the LCT will be a great one.

“In some of these things you have to make an assumption about common-sense, that the government will make a decision but they will be advised by treasury ultimately, and treasury will go ‘if we do this, it will fall off a cliff.’

“They know one of the big factors on the parallel import decision was the ability for that to have a very negative effect on employment and skills training and the network, so they understood that, they did their research they spoke to the industry. They will do the same with this.

“Treasury will make an assessment based on ‘you don’t want huge blunt shocks to the economy’. The automotive sector is a big sector, big employer, a big contributor to tax, you don’t want to dislocate that, governments want more revenue, not less.

“They are always prepared to trade off as they have in other free trade agreements, a reduction in revenue in some areas with an increase in economic activity in others, because you know then that you will generate more employment, more commercial activity, there is more income tax, more company tax, more GST, so they make that assessment, I am not worried that it will go the wrong way.”

Mercedes-Benz, along with other European manufacturers, has for years lobbied the EU to fight against the LCT, labelling it “a false tariff”.

“The EU arrived in that position a long time ago, and all the EU manufactures have lobbied very hard in the EU to say ‘our cars are the ones that are most affected. [If] you want to have a free trade with Australia, it has got to go’. Government ministers have acknowledged it, they may not like it, but they know that it has got to go, if you want a free trade agreement with EU it has to go.”

How and when the Luxury Car Tax will being to unwind is still unclear, however if it does begin reducing by 2019, it will see the price of high end vehicles reduced substantially. Following the replacement of the first Holden, the 48-215 gained the unofficial nickname of Holden FX. This designation was first used in the Drawing Office at GM-H in 1952 as an unofficial means of distinguishing between early 48-215 vehicles with front suspension using lever-action shock absorbers, and those with the new telescopic shock absorber front suspension introduced in 1953 - the term "FX" was pencilled onto a parts list for the new suspension components.[3][4] The title "FX" later came into use in used car advertisements to describe models with the later suspension, first being used by Melbourne dealer Reg Smith Motors in two advertisements in the 10 February 1960 issue of The Age.[5] Use of the term "FX" gradually spread to cover all 48-215 and 50-2016 vehicles, although the term has never been used by Holden in any official manner.

The design was originally penned in the United States by Chevrolet,[6] but was not used because it was deemed too small for the U.S. market as it developed after the war. Instead the design became the basis of only the 48-215 model. Its American origins are quite apparent, as it closely resembles Chevrolets of the period that did make it to production, particularly the Fleetline Aerosedan and the second generation Deluxe. Development of the 48-215 began in 1944.

600hp, 1000nm of Torque, plug in Hybrid.... Its a Bird, Its a plane.... Parent company Geely has been a generous, hands-off benefactor, and the results are showing. The Swedish automaker is now one of the most forward-thinking in the industry and a home to good engineering and design across disciplines that include interiors, infotainment, and autonomous driving. Its Scalable Product Architecture provides the building blocks for a number of very good vehicles; both the XC90 and S90 impressed us, and a brief drive in the smaller XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid has whet my appetite for a proper test later this year.

Volvo says that the Polestar 1 is only about 50 percent SPA underneath its carbon-fiber skin. The rest is unique to the car, developed by Polestar's engineers with the aim of delivering a true driver's car. Öhlins supplies its semi-active Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension technology, and it sounds like each rear wheel has its own electric motor for torque-vectoring. Combined hybrid output will be 600hp (447kW) and 738lb-ft (1,000Nm), so it should be a true performance car. But at the same time don't expect a featherweight; Volvo says it will have a battery-only range of 93 miles (150km), which means a lot of lithium-ion onboard.

FURTHER READING

Volvo says from 2019 all new models it introduces will be electric or hybrid

Back in July, Volvo made the rest of the industry look bad, announcing five new electric vehicles as part of its plan to electrify or hybridize its range.
